Jaisalmer Fort

The Jaisalmer Citadel

Architectural Marvel

Rising from the golden sands of the Thar Desert like a mirage, Jaisalmer Fort is a living urban center. Built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, its yellow sandstone walls change color from tawny lion during the day to magical honey-gold as the sun sets.

Chronicles of Valor

Silk Route Sentinel

Situated on the Trikuta Hill, the fort was a vital trade stop on the ancient Silk Route, controlling the caravan trade between India and Central Asia.

The 2.5 Jauhars

The fort faced sieges leading to Jauhars. The term "half Jauhar" comes from a siege where the men fought to death but the women did not commit Jauhar as reinforcement arrived.

Design & Defense

99 Bastions

The fort has 99 bastions, 92 of which were built between 1633 and 1647 to strengthen its defenses.

Inside the fort are exquisitely carved havelis (mansions) like Patwon Ki Haveli, showcasing the wealth of the merchants of that era.
