The Essence
The Charans and Bhats were the bards and genealogists of Rajputana. They were the keepers of history, maintaining intricate family trees (Vanshavalis) that traced lineage back thousands of years. They also composed poetry (Dingal literature) extolling the deeds of warriors, ensuring their names lived on forever. Their word was considered law, and they often acted as mediators in conflicts.
Origins & History
Before written history was widespread, these communities served as the oral library of the region. They inspired warriors in battle with poems of their ancestors' valor.
