The Essence
Ghoomar is the most recognizable folk dance of Rajasthan, known for the graceful twirling movements of women dressed in heavy Ghagras. The name derives from "Ghoomna" (twirling). The dance involves rhythmic clapping and singing while moving in a circle. The dancers face is often covered with a translucent veil (ghunghat).
Origins & History
Historically, Ghoomar was performed by the Bhil tribe to worship Goddess Saraswati. It was later embraced by the Rajput royal families and became a signature dance for weddings and festivals like Holi and Teej.
